Mary Tibbats Smith

Mary Tibbats Smith

What a sad day to report that Mary Tibbats lost her battle against breast cancer on Tuesday, February 27, 2024. She had been in Hospice since early January. She changed her Facebook name to Mary Sunshine Smith Wright, but was Mary Ellen to those of us who knew her in high school. Mary shared her trials and tribulations with her cancer, and even posted photos of her hair loss while she underwent treatment. It was a brave thing to do–to share such intimate details with the world, but that was Mary–carefree, kind and gentle.

I know very little from reading what I could on Facebook. Mary’s husband was Brian Smith, and she had a daughter named Kim Overbeck. There will be a service or memorial in California, date is unknown. If anybody hears anything more, please let me know (lindakbuckley@yahoo.com), and I will publicize it. If anyone gets ahold of an obituary, let me know so I can share it, too. Thanks.

So very sad, she was such a sweet lady. She made a point of meeting me for lunch one time when she was in SF for a work thing. We had a lovely visit. She will be really missed. RIP Mary and my condolences to her family.

In 1971, Mary and her sister Kathy were living together in an apartment in Day City. I was invited to attend a rap session Kathy had organized and that is where I met the girl who would eventually become my wife. I owe nearly 50 years of wedded bliss to my high school friendship with Mary. I will miss her smile and her unlimited optimism for life.
