James Hunter Potts
November 4, 1926 – June 10, 2021
Jim Potts was the eldest of three boys (Jim, Bob and Tony) born in El Paso, TX in 1926. The family relocated to Berkeley, CA where he attended The School of the Madeleine’s, St Mary’s College High School and later UC Berkeley earning a BS in Mathematics. He married his beloved Julia (Juel) Maloney in 1957 and soon after moved to San Francisco.

Jim and Juel set up household in the Sunset District within the parish of Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church where their family grew and long term relationships were developed. He supported family mostly by teaching Mathematics at Westmoor High School, but had many jobs including preparing taxes until 92 years of age. He volunteered his time tutoring grade school children, enjoyed his early morning gym and coffee group, looked forward to the Pedro and Bridge groups, yet thrived most tending his garden. Jim and Juel had five children, John (Barbara), Jim, Dennis (Carter), Janet and Mary Jo. He is also survived by his grandchildren Claire, Hannah, and Tim, great grandchild Kasidy James and his extended family who fondly remember him as ‘the fun Uncle’. Jim spent his life focused on the priorities of God, family and friends. He will be missed by many and envied by more as he is finally reunited with Juel, having a Manhattan, playing cards and scrappy golf with family or one of many members of the Over the Hill Gang. A Memorial Mass will be held on July 17th, 11am at Holy Name of Jesus Church 1555 39th Avenue, San Francisco, CA.
