In Memoriam: Donald Crowley

Don Crowley

Verified by Stephen Ehat.

The following obituary was published in The Times (of San Mateo), on Wednesday, March 17, 1971, the day after Don’s death. Don was born as Donald Anthony Fanaro and two months before his fifth birthday his mother, Doris, married William J. Crowley and he thereafter used the Crowley surname, at least through high school, though when he died (just short of two years after graduating from Westmoor), he had been using his birth surname, Fanaro. The obituary reads:

“Donald Anthony Fanaro, 19, of 84 Oceanside, Daly City, died Tuesday in San Francisco following an illness. A native of San Francisco, he was an alumnus of Westmoor High School.

“Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday from Duggans Serra Mortuary, Daly City. Interment will be at Cypress Lawn Cemetery. Survivors include his mother, Doris Crawley, sisters Judy Lowe and Carol Menezes and brothers, Dennis and Billie Crawley.”

(Note from Linda Harvey: Don was born on May 10, 1951. You can see the Find A Grave Memorial for Don at https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/87851001/donald-fanaro. Note also that the newspaper obituary quoted above misspelled the family surname as “Crawley” (with an “a”) instead of “Crowley” (with an “o”), and the reference to “Billie Crawley” as a brother is also erroneous; Billie was Don’s younger sister, a graduate of the Westmoor H.S. class of 1971.
