Other memories by Bruce Pope

“We won the game. It was a home game but I don’t remember who we played. The bandage on my hand and the blood on me places the photo for me. I had gone out for a pass. I missed it and my hands slid across the grass. When I returned to the huddle I was standing next to Steve Powell. I told him to move over, he was bleeding all over me. Then I realized it was me that was bleeding from a deep cut on my hand. Following the next play I showed Coach Coolidge. He pushed the edges of the wound together and sprayed my hand with sticky spray and taped it. Two days later my Dad asked me about the bandage. When I took it off to show him he let go a couple of expletives and took me to an emergency room where they stitched it up. I remember well because the anesthetic didn’t work on half the wound…a thank you I would like to pass along to my football buddies. I felt they all always picked up their level of play when I had to carry the ball. Nothing was ever said but I could always see it.”
