It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Stephen Ralph Del Verde, affectionately known as Steve, who passed away on August 27, 2024, at his home, at the age of 73. He was born on March 22, 1951, in Brookline, MA to the late Alfred R. Del Verde and Ida (Boudreau) Del Verde. Steve lived a life filled with adventure and a deep compassion for helping others.

After high school, he went on to earn his Bachelors of Science degree in Oceanography from California State University, Northridge. He fondly told friends that the college he attended had no football team, but they did have a surfing team. He spent his career as a Computer Systems Engineer for IBM, where he worked tirelessly for 30 years before retiring. His professional journey was marked by excellence and innovation, leaving a lasting impact on his colleagues and the industry.

Beyond his professional achievements, Steve was a man who loved being on the water; he enjoyed skiing, sailing and scuba diving. He had a love for motorcycles and was an avid fan of the Grateful Dead having traveled with the band for many years.

Steve was a long-time resident of San Francisco, CA, a city that held a special place in his heart. He later relocated to Jacksonville, NC to continue his career with IBM.

He is survived by his loving daughters that he raised on his own as a single dad, Veronica Del Verde and her husband, Joe Manning, with whom he lived with in Jacksonville and Tanya Del Verde and her husband, David Painter, of Cary. His grandchildren, Mason, Sophia, Kyler, Karson, Selena, Everleigh, and one on the way, were the light of his life, and he cherished every moment spent with them.

A caring and selfless individual, even in the face of illness, Steve continued to put others before himself. For 32 years, he helped people suffering from the diseases of alcoholism and addiction to recover, find hope and strength in their darkest hours. His legacy of compassion and service will continue to inspire all who knew him.

To honor Steve’s wishes, his ashes will be placed in the San Francisco Bay, a fitting tribute to a man who loved the sea and the city that shaped so much of his life.

Steve’s memory will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched. Rest easy, Dad. Your spirit of adventure, kindness, and unwavering support for others will forever be remembered.
